About Us
John Weitz, Owner
Honu Comfort Catamarans was founded by John Weitz, the owner of a Kahuna Boat Wiring located in Marathon, Florida. John began his passion for fabrication as a 14-year-old boy working his first job at an auto body/collision shop in Drayton Plains, Michigan. John got his start sanding primer and busting Bondo. After a few years of hard work, he gained the experience necessary to become a technician capable of performing a vast array of automotive duties from start to finish. This included repairing and painting cars while working at multiple body shops and custom automobile centers as he worked his way up the ranks. John ended up with a successful career building street rods at a street rod shop in Pontiac Michigan.
Eventually, John decided to move to the Florida Keys to pursue his next adventure! He started off working at a dive scuba center on Big Pine Key selling scuba trips and scuba gear. Much like his life in Michigan, John worked his way up from sales to Mate, then Dive Master and finally Dive Boat Captain. As a Captain and Scuba Instructor on Catamaran dive boats for multiple dive shops. John’s admiration for the stability and reliability of multihull vessels grew. John was astonished at the fact that a 45-foot catamaran dive boat could easily and safely carry 40 scuba divers and 80 scuba tanks with only twin 200 horsepower outboard engines through 3-5 foot choppy seas.
Around the same time in his life, John decided to purchase a small houseboat and immediately fell in love with being able to go out on the water for days at a time with all the comforts of home! The only disappointment was that his small houseboat couldn’t navigate much more than small waves. This was the birth of an idea john had, which eventually became a dream of his. John decided he was going to build an ocean-going Houseboat that combined the stability of a large catamaran with the comforts of a Houseboat. He decided for this to be the ultimate boat it should be able to facilitate activities that you normally would need different types of boats for.
The first step in John’s plan was that he would need experience and capital to make his dream come true. John opened a boat wiring company and after 20 years of rigging and wiring boats, he finally had the experience and the capital needed to make his dream come true. Two decades of working on a wide variety of boats John has seen first hand the importance of thoughtful engineering and the dangers of bad design. John finally knew that by combining his experience in fabrication, driving multi-hull vessels and 20 years of wiring and rigging boats he was finally ready to build a superior boat made from the best materials, with the best structural design and rigged to absolute perfection.
John decided to reach out to his identical twin brother that designs robotic arms using engineering software and told him about his concept. With his brother’s help, he was able to design his concept into a computer model of his Houseboat/Catamaran hybrid design. From there John bought a test houseboat/catamaran hull to help him work out the final design. John spent thousands of hours perfecting the design and testing it on the water. He took it out 5 days a week for a total of 3 years. Altering the layout and design and testing subsequently through a rigorous and calculated methodology was a very important step In designing his boat. Once John was confident he had accomplished his dream and built the perfect boat, Honu Comfort Catamarans was born. Honu Comfort Catamarans are now available in 6 Models along with customization in nearly limitless combinations. Why we use Turtles for our theme.
Honu is Hawaiian for turtle, and also in Hawaii is a symbol of wisdom and good luck!
Sea turtles are mysterious and resilient. With only seven species it isn’t common to see a sea turtle in the wild, which makes it exciting when you do. Honu comfort cats are a new classification in boats, not just another center console, giant expensive yacht or your everyday pleasure boat, owners will have a very unique and fun vessel not seen on every dock.
Sea turtles have been around for a very long time close to 200 million years outliving dinosaurs by a whopping 85 million years. Sea Turtles often live over 100 years, the oldest recorded sea turtle was 188 years old. Our Catamarans are built to last too, using high-quality materials and structurally sound design.
Sea turtles have a built-in GPS that can sense the earth’s magnetic field and use it to navigate the oceans. We offer a built-in GPS for our Catamarans!

The solid one-piece construction of our Catamarans significantly reduces the chance of getting any water in the pontoons. With 6 individual sealed compartments and high-density foam bulkheads, our Catamarans are extremely buoyant and seaworthy. Our Catamarans can be used successfully with a variety of engines and motors. On the smaller side, our Catamarans can get on plane with as little as 150HP twin outboards. We recommend to our customers at least 200 HP and our designer John Weitz who has a background building hot rods in Detroit Motor City says ” I like to go fast you, get the twin 350HP!”. We offer Outboards that use gasoline or diesel and we even have an electric motor option if speed is not your concern. Our electric motors are 70 HP each and driven by a battery that is solar charged. With a light load and the wind in your favor, you might even get on plane with the electric motors! If you’re not worried about going fast they can be quite a savings in engine and fuel cost.

Additionally, our Catamarans feature a wheelchair tie-down system allowing wheelchair users to ride in worry-free comfort and stability.
